Your Musings from this Small World of Theatre

Tick Tock Boom Clap is inspired by my stories of theatre, but EVERYONE has a story.  Actors, directors, musicians, audience members, tech... all of you! Elementary school productions to Broadway opening nights.
Here's a place to share YOUR stories with others who love theatre!
Ideas:  What is your favorite story from theatre?  What was your first show?
What does theatre mean to you?  What has theatre given to you?
Thanks for sharing!

First show: The Frog Prince in 4th grade. I was the frog. And I typed up all the scripts by myself. Do you remember typewriters and carbon paper? :)

First full production: The King & I in 1979 at Napa High School. We had an amazing music department. We built our own sets, and costumes were hand-sewn. The high school students were the cast & orchestra. And we ran for 2 weekends to sold-out crowds. Watching the video, it truly was quite an accomplishment for a high school. I played Eliza and was assistant choreographer. The choir director, Larry Edwards, opened the door to theater for me, and I will be forever grateful. This was the launching pad for 25 years of "playing" on the stage.

I remember that show (my sister was in the pit orchestra)! In retrospect, the quality went far beyond a typical high school production...especially the performance of the student who played the King, he was, absolutely amazing.

my first show... Oklahoma - I got the LEAD! (I fudged and said I'd been in some others... shhhhhhhh!) But my favorite memory is when I finally "had" to kiss Curley onstage (it was awful at the time). I was a freshman in High School and completely afraid of everything "opposite sex" My director was so incredibly patient. The lead was a Junior or Senior. He was all, "whatever". She walked us through that scene so gently (over and OVER, poor thing) and I finally did it. MWAH! I exclaimed... Kathleen Ray said, "GREAT, let's not make that noise onstage - shall we??"

I met my wife in the first show I drummed for. She was the lead and it was my first experience ever with theater. That was 20 years ago. Theater really did change my life!

Becoming involved in our community theatre opened my life to wonderful new friends, that I love like family. Even though I've only been in one show, thusfar, it is such a thrill to support the incredible talent that walks through those doors. Why did I wait until I was in my 40's to start having the time of my life?

When I was about 9 Dad took me to San Francisco to see The Nutcracker, just him and I. I thought it was the greatest thing ever!! I was always pretty shy about being on stage though. Over the years I have seen Wicked and Mary Poppins, Peter Pan and saw the Lion King in Vegas in December. Love the costumes, the sets, just the creativity of it all.

YES! The Nutcracker was a yearly event for my family as well... so moving and so important to my understanding of the power of live theater. Love those memories.

My older children, who I shamelessly insisted be in theater from the getgo... were in the first shows I directed (at ages 3 and 6) at Contra Costa Children's Theater. They were entranced and serious. They would also sit for hours while I worked with the older kids. I don't have the chance to offer them that now, but I am blessed with a 16 year old who teaches dance and singing at the local school of performing arts school. And my daughter loves to act. So whatever I "MADE" them do in the beginning, has simply become their passion. It's something we can talk about when there isn't anything else to bring us together - and it extends to music outside of theater, life outside of the stage. So incredibly important to me and so valuable to our relationships. Thank you St. Genesius.

I love this stuff. I'm experiencing the essence of community theatre. We rehearse in a Jr High and in a Church. We get fitted for costumes in a storage lot. We put together sets in a warehouse and move them to the temporary site. This is Pittsburg Community Theatre, but it could be anywhere. I really love the true community theatre experience.
